Winter and Snowshoe Hikes in Nuuksio National Park

Winter season 2020-2021 our day trips do not include transportation.Read about  the changes in our services due to COVID-19 pandemic

On our winter hiking tour, you can experience magical Finnish winter nature in Nuuksio National Parks close to Helsinki. The winter safari takes you to the snow-covered forests and also safely to ice-covered lakes.

When the snow cover in the forest is deep enough, we put on snowshoes. Using snowshoes is simple. If you can walk, you know how to snowshoe. If there is not that much snow for snowshoes, we can hike in the forest and typically also on the frozen lakes of Nuuksio.

Walking on snowy terrain is an excellent opportunity to explore animal tracks on the snow. In the middle of our trip, we’ll have a break with a nice warm drink and snack by a campfire. Sitting by the fire after the hike in nature can be relaxing, even meditative, experience.

Program in a nutshell

  • Relaxed winter hiking in Nuuksio National Park
  • Includes transportation from Helsinki, guiding and snack by the fire
  • Program duration with transportation is ca 5 hours, activity 3,5 hours
  • Guiding languages: English, Finnish, group size 1-8, bigger groups on request
  • Scheduled and private tours

Scheduled trips start with transportation from Helsinki City Centre. From there our guide takes you with a minibus to the National Park. You can also step on the bus en route from Espoo. Read more about route and pickup points. Private trips include pickup from your hotel. In Nuuksio we start with a short briefing to snowshoeing and to the route.

Our route goes through the snowy terrain in the National Park. We cross lakes and swamps, walk through the forest and enjoy the magical winter forest. Our guide leads the groups at the right pace so that everybody can enjoy. Now and then we will stop and look around and listen to the sounds of nature. We will also have a warm drink and some snack to eat during the break by the campfire.

On the scheduled trip, you should be able to walk 6 km in varying terrain. On the private trip, we will adjust the route and distance according to your wishes. After the tour, we will take you back to the Helsinki city centre.

What is a Full Moon Trip – We start our hike after sunset and use headlamps. The snow reflects light from the moon so that we can walk in open places, like ice-covered lakes, with no extra light. If the sky is clear we see the moon and stars. See pictures from a full moon trip on Jussi Hellsten’s blog.

Please, wear warm outdoor clothing and have an extra piece of warm clothing, for example pullover, for the break. Use footwear, such as hiking shoes or winter boots, that cover your ankles from snow.  We go through all the necessary safety procedures in the beginning of the walk. Please, get acquainted to safety and general instructions for day tours.

You can also rent winter clothes for your trip directly from us. Read more about renting winter wear.

Due to the weather conditions and other circumstances minor changes to the program are possible.
